Also within the framework of this visit and working session, the Ambassador presented the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in Hue with a Bodhi tree propagated from the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree , which is over 2,300 years old. The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree was originally grafted from a southern branch of the sacred Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India, where Buddha Shakyamuni attained enlightenment. More than 2,300 years ago, in the year 236 of the Buddhist calendar, King Ashoka had it brought to the island nation of Sri Lanka as a gift and is now considered a national treasure by Sri Lanka.
