Meeting with H.E. the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Viet Nam, H.E. Xiong Bo
Ambassador Prof. A. Saj U. Mendis paid a courtesy call on H.E. the Ambassador of China, H.E. Xiong Bo, during which the two envoys discussed range of issues of significance and relevance including geo-political and geo-economics issues. Ambassador Mendis expressed gratitude to H.E. Xiong Bo for the assistance, cooperation, and facilitation extended to Sri Lanka over the years and added that the peoples of Sri Lanka much appreciate and value. Ambassador Mendis further added that the unprecedented economic rise of China was most unique and iconic since the GDP of China was less than USD 270 billion when China liberalized the economy in 1979. Today, after four decades later, the GDP of China is in the vicinity of USD 19 trillion (USD 19,000 billion) and is the second largest economy in the world. The 60-minute meeting with H.E. Xiong Bo was cordial and informative and both the envoys pledged to work together to advance the intrinsic interests of the respective countries.
